Innovative Design Labs (IDL) is an engineering-led, research and development company focused on creating cutting-edge sensing technologies and transitioning them into medical, consumer, and education products. We are conveniently located in Northeast Minneapolis less than 2 miles from University of Minnesota’s East Bank Campus. IDL specializes in productization of research funded federal research grants, collaborating with academia and industry experts. Example developments include gait estimation with wearable sensors, capturing bio-signals with mmWave radar, improving exoskeleton control and functionality, and interactive augmented-reality tools.
IDL is seeking a full-time candidate with knowledge, experience, and interest in the fields of embedded firmware, algorithm development, real-time signal processing and sensor integration. Responsibilities
- Perform product development heavily focused on embedded real-time systems
- Design and create software for embedded systems, sensor integration, and data fusion
- Develop, implement, and test algorithms to transform sensor data into actionable results
- Manage the technology transfer process leading up to production with partner corporation
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in embedded software engineering for product development
- Proficient in C/C++ for embedded systems
- Experience developing real-time, multi-threaded systems
- Experience with source code version control and issue tracking
- Must be a self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic and sense of personal responsibility for work outcomes
- Not afraid of doing a little math
- Curiosity and willingness to tackle research tasking across diverse subject-matter domains
- Legally permitted to work in the United States
- Ability to work in our office, when required, in Minneapolis, MN
- M.S. or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering
- Robotics, Computer Vision, Applied Estimation, and/or Machine Learning experience
- Familiarity with MATLAB and Python
- Experience with real time operating systems (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar).
- Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations

Computer Vision R&D Internship

IDL is an engineering-led, research and development company focused on creating cutting-edge sensing technologies and transitioning them into medical and consumer electronic products. We are conveniently located in Northeast Minneapolis less than 2 miles from University of Minnesota’s East Bank Campus. Much of our work is funded through competitive federal research grants. Active technologies we develop include gait estimation with wearable sensing, capturing bio-signals using radar, enhancing exoskeleton control, and the use of interactive, augmented-reality in education.
This position is ideal for a graduate student studying EE/CompE/CSci with interests in sensors, algorithm development, and/or computer vision. Projects will provide real-world product development experience with 3D image processing and will provide students freedom to develop novel solutions to challenging problems.

- Perform algorithm development and testing focused on performance and accuracy for vision-aided navigation and augmented reality applications
- Graduate Student pursuing a CSci, CompE, or EE degree
- Must be a self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic and sense of personal responsibility for work outcomes
- Proficient in MATLAB and/or Python
- General curiosity and a willingness to take on tasks outside their previous experience
- Legally permitted to work in the United States
- Ability to work in our office located in NE Minneapolis, MN
- Prior experience in Robotics, Computer Vision, and/or Applied Estimation
- Familiar with Depth Cameras, Camera Calibration, Object Classification, and/or Pose Estimation
- Familiar with OpenCV in C++ or C#
